I saw an interview with the lead singer of Incubus Brandon Boyd a few months back and I couldn’t help but be reminded of Anthony Kiedis. Mr Kiedis - a.k.a. the lead singer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers - has to be my biggest funk rock idol, and it was Brandon’s mannerisms and laid back attitude that instantly caught my attention. If that persona and attitude could work so successful for the Chili Peppers then surely Incubus were onto something good.
I decided to have a look at their music because at that stage I only knew of the one hit Drive. Having heard the single on radio and seen the video clip on TV, I was just cottoning onto what was the tail end of their last album Make Yourself.
Morning View has only just been released in the last few months and has already made its mark in the New Zealand market. The first single Wish You Were Here is still in the Top 50 and the album has already spent a healthy five weeks in the charts.
Morning View is their fourth full-length album excluding their debut EP Enjoy Incubus. That means if you take a liking to this album, which I’m sure you will, then you have the pleasure of a bit of back catalogue archaeology expedition into your local record store looking for past gems. There’s Make Yourself, Fungus Amongus (great title), and S.C.I.E.N.C.E.
With a face like Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters Brandon’s really no match for the long locks of Anthony Kiedis but close your eyes and listen to that voice and your bound to get swept away in sensual sound anyway.
Great ‘lying on your bed singing to your self after having a cry about something’ music.
